Find out more about why being carbon neutral is so important.

Marvai is very proud not to be contributing to global greenhouse gas emissions.

But what does that even mean? Let’s have a look at some of the climate change words and ideas you’re probably hearing more and more, and see why being carbon neutral is so important.

Some climate jargon explained

Everything on Earth is made of carbon. When we humans make stuff we’re in the bad habit of sending this carbon into the atmosphere in the form of different greenhouse gases, like methane and carbon dioxide. These potent gases are changing our climate, which is already having major impacts around the world.

We’re facing a climate crisis. Increased fires, floods, storms and pests are making life difficult for many millions of people. Marvai believes that people already have the solutions to mitigate (lessen) climate change, we just need the political and social will to make the uncomfortable changes needed to do so.

Climate change is impacting the world’s most vulnerable communities the hardest.

If you spend money, spend it right

Consumers – people who spend money or use things – have more power than they may feel. If you do or don’t buy something, you’re sending a message. If pollution, waste, exploitation and abuse of workers are not your thing, then make sure you support companies whose thing it isn’t either.

What’s wrong with same old same old?

To make farms more productive, the business-as-usual approach is to pump fertilisers into the ground, pesticides into the air, and in some cases, artificially heat and light plants to increase yield and grow more. Economically it makes sense because the cost of throwing stuff away at the end and the consequences for the environment and climate are not factored in.

But it's insane. The amount of energy and water used, and the pollution that is created, is so expensive for our environment and the people within it. This is not acceptable to us, because we don’t want our products to cost the Earth. That's why Marvai takes a different approach.

The Dark Thing kinda captures the climate change mood.

What is Marvai doing to do good?

Organic raw materials

Organic farming means letting plants grow naturally, the way nature intended. Instead of using pesticides, planting a variety of crops distracts bugs. The best kind of fertiliser is cow poo, not chemicals. And clean soil means that farmers can grow onions and food in the dry season instead of needing to irrigate water. Soil is the foundation of all life. It stores huge amounts of carbon and can take thousands of years to form so we need to look after it.

The sun and the wind keep the lights on

All Marvai products are made in factories powered by renewable energy. Renewable sources of energy minimise pollution, unlike fossil fuels that release greenhouse gases and contribute to global warming when they’re used.

Marvai products are made in the Isle of Wight (top) and India (bottom) in factories that are powered by the sun and wind.

Even our Marvai website is carbon neutral because we use renewable energy-powered web servers up in the cloud.

This is the Google Cloud Platform cloud server in the Netherlands, one of the places our site is hosted. It's nerdy. And it's carbon neutral.

Plant-based packaging

All Marvai products and packaging are made using natural materials. While it can take hundreds of years for plastic bags to break down, paper biodegrades in weeks. No waste, no plastic pollution.

Plastic is made from oil and emits carbon when its formed, but the carbon in our paper mailers was captured from the atmosphere during photosynthesis, when a plant grows. And when the mailers are finally finished, they will degrade into soils and natural systems.

You can pop our mailers in the compost once your friends have opened their presents.

Reusability

Marvai’s recycled range is made with organic cotton that has been sent back and remade into something new. This reduces the material needed to make a new yarn by using the material we already have. And by only printing what people want when they want it, waste is designed out at every stage. Waste saved is carbon saved.

Wooden feathers make a nature statement on this recycled organic cotton sweatshirt.

Tree planting turns a small number negative

Trees are famous for their carbon dioxide absorbing superpowers – among other important things, like cleaning our water and air. Marvai works with Teemill, who in turn supports tree-planting nonprofit organisations to sequester, or soak up, enough carbon dioxide to make our products net zero. So what is net zero?

Net zero means that no extra carbon dioxide is going into the atmosphere, it’s being sucked up by all those trees. Basically, by planting a whole lot of trees, the total carbon dioxide absorbed is more than the carbon dioxide produced when our products are made. Renewable energy, organic farming and no plastic are awesome, but it's the trees that get Marvai to net zero.

Teemill works with Tree-Nation and Eden Reforestation Projects to replant forests in Madagascar.

We are facing a climate crisis.
